You have probably heard of the Loudness Wars. With the introduction of smart digital compressor limiters in the 90s, it became possible to literally put noise against the bar of 0 dB. The result: rock-hard pop and smashing commercials. The problem for broadcasters was that such commercials were delivered according to the applicable (legal) standard: -9 dB or -18 dB. They could not be refused. In this example, you can see what that means in practice:
On the left the original: unprocessed and dynamic: fairly large differences between hard and soft. Next to what happens if that noise is limited to – 9dB according to the standard (limiting).
